How I find healthy restaurants in my city, or healthy options on the menu?
I get this question all of the time, so I decided to bring on an expert to help me answer it. Jared Koch is the founder of Clean Plates, a website, book, and brand dedicated to guiding you to the cleanest food in your city. Clean Plates has city restaurant guides in NYC and LA, and in case you don’t live in one of those cities, here are Jared and my top 3 tips for finding the healthiest options in your hood:
1. When looking for healthy restaurants do a Google search. Search terms like Vegan, Health, Farm to Table, and Local with Restaurant and your city. It should pull up a list of delicious and healthy options. For vegans HappyCow.net is a great option for finding restaurants around the globe.
2. Ask questions. Call ahead to make sure there are options on the menu to suit your lifestyle. Don’t be afraid to make requests for healthier options like vegetable plates, or a vegan entree. As a vegan I never have problems when eating out. I just make sure to kindly ask questions.
3. If you’re at a not-so-healthy restaurant, make the most of it by enjoying your meal AND ordering something healthy to go along with it. For example, order a Vegan BLT with a green salad or a green juice. Don’t stress too much about what you’re eating. Stress is toxic too, and can do as much harm (or more) than junk food!
